Introduction
In February, we’re diving into a new series titled Winning the War Within, where we’ll explore the internal battles we face and discover what God’s Word says about them. Anxiety, a universal struggle, is a key focus, though this won’t be an exhaustive look at mental health. Instead, we’ll draw on Scripture for principles to combat worry, stress, and the turmoil of our thoughts.

Anxiety statistics show its pervasive grip: 43% of people reported increased anxiety in 2024 compared to 2023. Nearly 1 in 5 adults experience an anxiety disorder each year. Yet, in every battle, God offers wisdom and strength. Whether through prayer, Scripture, or professional help, God’s Word equips us to win the war within.

1. Our Needs Aren’t Small to God, but They Are Small for God

In Matthew 6:25-26, Jesus speaks directly to our worries:
“Don’t worry about your life—what you will eat, drink, or wear. Look at the birds of the air; they don’t sow or reap, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren’t you worth much more than they?”

This truth reminds us that while our needs are significant to God, they’re not too big for Him. He values us deeply and provides for our every need. When you feel anxious, remind yourself of your worth in God’s eyes and His power to provide.

2. When Worry Tries to Divide Us, God Holds Us Together

The Greek word for “worry” in this passage means “to be pulled apart.” Worry divides us, scattering our thoughts and peace. Jesus invites us to trust Him, letting God hold us together when anxiety tries to pull us apart.

Instead of telling yourself to “get it together,” hear God’s promise: “I’ll hold you together.” You don’t have to face life’s struggles alone.

3. Choose Productive Behavior Over Destructive Worry

Jesus asks in Matthew 6:27, “Can any of you add a moment to your life by worrying?” The answer is no. Worry wastes our energy and time, while faith redirects that energy into productivity.

Next time worry strikes, choose a productive response:

  • Pray and trust God.

  • Take a walk or engage in a hobby.

  • Plan something enjoyable or meaningful.

By choosing productive behaviors, you exercise faith in God’s provision and care.

4. Seek First the Kingdom of God

Matthew 6:33 reminds us to prioritize God: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things will be provided for you.” Anxiety often stems from misplaced priorities. We chase comfort, success, or possessions, yet these pursuits leave us empty.

When we seek God first, everything else falls into place. Make God the foundation of your personal life, marriage, finances, and habits, and watch how His peace guards your heart and mind.

5. Let Tomorrow Worry About Itself

Jesus concludes in Matthew 6:34: “Don’t worry about tomorrow; tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” He doesn’t dismiss today’s challenges but simplifies them: focus on today.

Much like Jesus’ call to “take up your cross daily,” this approach keeps us grounded. By trusting God with tomorrow, we free ourselves to live fully today.

Conclusion
Winning the war within starts with trusting God:

  • God cares about your needs—they’re not small to Him.

  • God holds you together—even when worry tries to divide you.

  • Choose productive over destructive behaviors—because worry adds nothing to your life.

  • Seek first His kingdom—placing God at the center of your decisions.

  • Let tomorrow worry about itself—and focus on today with faith.

Whatever battle you’re facing, God’s wisdom and presence are enough. Trust Him with your worries, and let His peace guard your heart and mind.

Take your next step today—lean into God’s Word, seek His kingdom, and rest in His promises.
